Trichy is the working gateway to Thanjavur. The international airport (TRZ), the major railway junction and the multi-modal bus stand all sit within an hour's drive of the temple gate. For most international arrivals, the route to the Big Temple goes through Trichy whether they realise it or not.

The routes — at a glance.

From Trichy airport.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ) is sixty kilometres west of the temple, an hour's drive on NH83. The prepaid taxi counter inside the arrivals concourse is regulated and unambiguous: ₹1,800 for a sedan, ₹2,400 for an SUV, ₹3,000 for a six-seater Innova. Receipts are printed; a number plate is recorded; the driver waits in the marked queue outside.

Ola and Uber operate at the airport but pickup wait times are unpredictable — the prepaid taxi is the more reliable option. Most Thanjavur hotels will arrange airport pickup; Svatma and Sangam offer complimentary pickup for stays of two nights or more. If you are arriving on the 06:15 IndiGo from Bangalore, you can be at the temple gate by 09:30, well within the morning darshan window.

From Trichy city.

From central Trichy — the Rockfort area, Cantonment, or Srirangam — an Ola or Uber outstation booking is the simplest option: ₹1,400 to ₹1,800 one-way. A chartered taxi from a Trichy hotel runs about the same, sometimes slightly less for round-trip same-day bookings.

By train.

Over twenty daily services connect Tiruchirappalli Junction (TPJ) to Thanjavur Junction (TJ) — the densest short-distance rail link in eastern Tamil Nadu. Journey time is 50 to 75 minutes; fares are ₹40 (general), ₹180 (AC chair), ₹250 (3AC). The useful trains for a day visit:

  • Tea Garden Express (12677) — leaves Trichy 14:45, reaches Thanjavur 15:55. Useful for an afternoon arrival.
  • Cholan Express (16853) — leaves Trichy 12:10, reaches Thanjavur 13:15. A late-morning option.
  • Rockfort Express (16177) — leaves Trichy 04:50 (continues from overnight Chennai run), reaches Thanjavur 05:55. Perfect for dawn at the temple.

By bus.

TNSTC runs Express and Ordinary services from Trichy Central bus stand to Thanjavur new bus stand every fifteen minutes. Journey time is around 75 minutes; fare is ₹80 (Ordinary) to ₹150 (Express AC). The buses are reliable and reasonably comfortable but slower than the train. From Thanjavur bus stand to the temple is two kilometres — a five-minute auto at ₹80.

A practical note

For most visitors arriving by air, the simplest combined trip is: land at Trichy, taxi to Thanjavur, two nights at a heritage hotel, drive back via Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara to Trichy airport for departure. The whole circuit fits a long weekend.

Pairing with Srirangam.

Trichy itself is worth a half-day if you have one. The Rockfort Temple (Ucchi Pillayar Temple) sits on top of an eighty-three metre granite outcrop and offers the best skyline view in the city. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, twelve kilometres north, is the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world by area — seven concentric prakaras, twenty-one gopurams, ten kilometres of perimeter wall. The two temples are 30 minutes apart, both en route from the airport to Thanjavur, and easy to fit into a single morning before the drive east.
